What tools, materials, and equipment do I need when troubleshooting?
This article lists some basic tools and supplies that you should consider having on-site when performing system maintenance or troubleshooting activities.
These are some basic items that Carmanah recommends be available at the job site:
Smartphone or digital camera | A smartphone can be very valuable in relaying product information to and from the Carmanah technical support team. |
Battery tester (for solar-powered systems) |
For solar-powered systems, a dedicated battery tester is the best tool for diagnosing battery health. |
Spare battery (for solar-powered systems) |
For solar-powered systems, a spare battery (even a very small temporary one) of the correct voltage can be very valuable in troubleshooting a system that is otherwise non-responsive. |
Multimeter | A multimeter is used to check electrical continuity and verify voltage readings at critical points in the system. |
System fuses | Spare system fuses of the correct size and type are often required, and will in some cases eliminate the need for subsequent site visits. Troubleshooting tip: Some systems use more than one fuse, so be sure to check all fuses. |
Product user manual | Download and print or have an electronic version of the product user manual available before arriving at the worksite. |
Assorted hand tools | Ensure you have a good assortment of wrenches, sockets, and screwdrivers (of various sizes and types). Technical tip: Some Carmanah products use small, spring cage type terminal blocks in various locations for wire connections; a small blade screwdriver is recommended for making or breaking connections with the terminal type. |
